Night Bloom

(RoW June 4 – 10)

night_bloom_1024I created Night Bloom for an urban fantasy contest online. This scene really pushed my computer to the limit – I had to work in wireframe mode (usually I use OpenGL) and I turned off the automatic render preview to speed up the scene a bit.

The Lamborghini Murcielago was modeled in 3ds Max and given to me by my good friend Hazem Zoom. It took him 3-4 months of continual work to finish this model. It is extremely realistic and very fun to work with. However, since it is so detailed, there are over 2 million polygons that make up this model! And there are alot of textures for each part of the car. This really slows my computer down, but having fun with this Lamborghini makes up for the lack of speed.

After setting up the overall lay-out of the scene (the scale of the car compared the buildings was tough to match and very time-consuming), I worked on the atmosphere and lighting. I used a custom atmosphere I had created a while back and added a large planet in the sky. Since the viewer cannot see the entire planet (only the top part), it looks more like a burst of light or something in the sky, and adds a great effect to the scene.

The render took about 6 and a half hours to complete. To finish, I adjusted the colors a little in Paint Shop Pro. Thanks for looking!

Also, this image is available as a print on DeviantArt: Night Bloom Print.
