The Pathfinder

(RoW Dec. 18 – 24)

pathfinderDay 6:
Right now, on C3D, there is a challenge in the 2D forum called, “Old Time”: postwork a Vue scene to look in the style of: an old phototgraph (b&w, sepia, or simply weathered and aged), classic oil painting, drawing, watercolor, etc. The point being to make it look as realistic and believable as possible (taken from C3D, thanks to Fromage Bleu).

Starting out in Vue 5, I decided to create an old photograph from WW2. I used a couple airplanes from the Vue library and created a custom HDRI environment from a photo (see Sounds of Autumn). The render didn’t take that long to complete, but I still had alot of postwork ahead of me to make it look old and worn.

In Photoshop, I started by adding a layer of scanned paper (all folded and creased), to make the image look all bent up. I then blurred the image quite a bit, brightened it a tad, and turned the colors into a brownish grey. After all the work: The Pathfinder turned out looking like a very old photograph!

The Pathfinder squadrons of the Royal Air Force were elite squadrons of RAF Bomber Command during World War II.

At the start of the war Bomber command made many daylight raids but the losses incurred due to lack of escorting fighters when operating over Europe led them to switch the majority of their bombing missions to nighttime. This reduced losses, but made identifying and then hitting a target accurately very difficult. To reduce this problem Pathfinder squadrons were created. The Pathfinders were to locate and mark the target with flares which the following main bomber force could then home in on. – Wikipedia
