Witch’s Brew

(RoW Nov. 20 – 26)

I created Witch’s Brew for my entry to Renderosity’s Annual Halloween Contest. Although I didn’t place (there were over 560 entries), I still had alot of fun creating my image. The theme for this year’s contest was “Wake the Dead”. A bunch of artists did scary scenes in graveyards, so I wanted to try something a little different and more light-hearted.

resurrects_dead_orig_editI started in Poser: posed the witch and added clothing/hair. I imported alot of objects into Vue with the witch, and set up the scene. Then I worked with the atmosphere and lighting and rendered the image.

As you can see, a bunch of work still needs to be done on the image. That’s where postwork comes in.

In Photoshop, I began with the witch’s dress (since I didn’t have a long enough dress object in Poser, I had to make my own). This is the first time I ever painted resurrects_dead_orig_edit3on an image in Photoshop. After I got done painting the dress, I painted some more hair on the witch (witch’s need long scraggly hair, right?). Also, the cat on the table needed to look a little more dead, so I painted on some blood. One of the hardest things I did in postwork, was removing part of the fireplace floor and putting wood in it’s place. Photoshop has a special brush that makes this easier, but it’s still pretty tough and time consuming. To finish off this step in postwork, I added some smoke around the cauldron.

resurrects_deadThis next step is somewhat easier than the first, but still takes time. I wanted the entire image to appear alot darker and there to be a red glow in the witch’s hut. To do this, you need to apply filters with the lighting. So after working with the lighting for some time, I finally got what I had imagined in the first place. I then added a quote that inspired me to create this image and my signature. Overall, this is one of the hardest and time consuming images that I’ve ever created (took me a little over 3 days to complete). But now I look at Witch’s Brew with much satisfaction and relief. Thanks for looking and enjoy!

  1. Good job! Very spooky….I love it!

  2. I remember all your hard work. It was worth it. M

  3. 3 days? Wow. I didn’t know it took so much time to make an image like that. Well, good work, Brady. Sorry you didn’t place.

I do have a question, however. Why is it that every thinks that witches are green? ;)

  4. That really looks great, Brady! The lighting is the best. That definalty made the picture! I like it when you show us the steps to the picture. It really shows the prosses.

“Why is it that everyone thinks that witches are green?”

Well, because if you have ugly, green skin with warts all over, you tend to look a little creepy. But if I used just the normal skin color, she would’ve looked like a deformed Samantha Stephens (Bewitched). Or I could’ve used red, orange, yellow, but that doesn’t look that great either. :)

  6. That is creepy… A good creepy though!!!
