Tor Mirmanda is a beautiful and peaceful image that attracted alot of artists on C3D. I was asked- “How can I get my castles to look like that?” “How did you get that wonderful Soft Atmospheric Hue?” Well, there are two answers. Volumetric Atmosphere and Photoshop.
A while back, I was trying to create my own volumetric atmosheres. After a few hours of experimenting, I realized that in order to create a good looking volumetric atmosphere, it takes alot of work and patience. In order to better understand the difference between Standard Atmospheres and Volumetric, a short description needs to be given.
Standard Atmosphere: …Uses a set of relatively straightforward rules to define the colors of the atmosphere. The physical existence of the atmosphere is not taken into account.
Volumetric Atmosphere: …Features an incredibly complex set of algorithms that capture the interactions of light with the atmosphere as light travels through it. The physical existence of the atmosphere is correctly considered in the process. This atmosphere is by far the more realistic.
So after finally creating a good looking Volumetric Atmosphere, I placed the castle in the scene and worked on the terrain/materials and the water material. Something else I learned about Volumetric atmospheres, is that it takes a long time to render. Oh well. Only a few hours more than usual.
After the render, I applied a layer in Photoshop, giving it a soft look. I also worked on the atmosphere a little bit more (wanted it a little more brighter). At last, I added the framing and lettering and called it finished.
Note: the name Tor Mirmanda is derived from the Old French word mirmande, meaning ‘fortified house or town’.
I love it! It gives such a calm, fairytale feel.
And tor means hill right? Like the tor with part of the church still standing at Glastonbury.
I want to be at Tor Mirmanda! Thanks for creating a beautiful place for us to enjoy looking at. M
That is breathtaking!!!!
Can I join y’all there? I really like the sky – clouds and sun and sahdows. Nice! Cool bridge too.
Dad
I think Traci pretty much summed it up. It *is* breathtaking! *wants a castle like that* Wonderful job, Brady!
COOL!
